Review
Paul Vunak has trained law enforcement, military, and Navy SEALS, and is a Jeet Kune Do master. Production values are excellent, and Vunak gets right down to work instructing you on what he considers are your most effective self-defense weapons, derived from Jeet Kune Do. There is absolutely no fluff in this video that you might find in others.
Vunak asserts that trapping range, where few fights occur, is the best range to fight in due to the effectiveness of the weapons available and few people fight in that range.
The techniques he describes are the eye jab, oblique kick, scoop kick, ear slap, knee kick, head butt, elbow strike, and bite. They're easy to learn, and you don't need a series of complex techniques such as joint locks and pressure points as taught in some martial arts. Since there are few tools and they are simple, they don't take two hours per day to train to become proficient.
The video is organized into 4 sections: trapping techniques, equipment training, training combinations, and street applications.
After describing and demonstrating a technique, Vunak shows how to practice it with a partner using equipment such as focus pads, elbow pads, heavy bag, and even a motorcycle helmet.
Just describing and practicing specific techniques without context of an attack won't make them available to you under stress. He goes on to show the application of combinations of techniques to specific types of attacks.
He shows several vignettes of different types of attacks and defense responses to each. After an attack scenario, he describes the self- defense combination used, analysis, explanation, and demonstration of the tools in the combination, and finally a replay of the scene in slow motion and full speed.
Also addressed are mass attacks and improvised weapons in the environment. However, I would have like to see more discussion on mass attacks, and other improvised weapons besides those found in a bar.
This video is the highest rated video by Erik Mann of Martial Arts Video Review, an impartial video review site. Mann and his crew are brutally honest when they review videos. His high rating is corroborated by other reviews in other sites as well.
Mastering the 8 covered techniques should be the foundation of your self-defense skills.
